ETSA agrees to meet Baudin Beach residents

29 Oct, 2009 03:56 PM
ETSA Utilities has agreed to meet with Baudin Beach residents and ratepayers about the installation of a power pole and overhead lines across the township’s reserve.

More than a dozen ratepayers have now voiced their concern about the aesthetic impact of the power lines to service lots 56, 57 and 58 Collins Crescent and have called for the line to be undergrounded.

No date has yet been set for the meeting and a second meeting may be called in Adelaide for off-island landholders.

Residents adjoining the reserve, led by Des Gubbin, have questioned ETSA’s consultation policy and the legality of putting overhead lines in a reserve.

At its May meeting, the Kangaroo Island Council asked ETSA to provide more information before granting an easement across the reserve to provide power to lots 56, 57 and 58 Collins Crescent.

ETSA replied that undergrounding the power would be expensive and would require a higher voltage line and the council granted an easement at its July meeting.

In a letter of September 30, ETSA addressed a number of Mr Gubbins’ concerns, saying it had acted in a “lawful manner” to find a “reasonable solution” and said there was other overhead infrastructure in the area.

Mr Gubbins also made a delegation to the October meeting of the Kangaroo Island Council seeking its support to request ETSA put the line underground.

The council reiterated its limited powers in regards to ETSA decision-making.

Mr Gubbins said last week that the group of dissatisified residents was growing in number and had collected a variety of evidence, including past correspondence with ETSA.
