Globe-trotting eel returns

15 Oct, 2009 04:40 PM
In 2006 to our great surprise, KI students, as part of Environmental Studies, caught two eels in the Stunsail Boom River. For the past 20 years eels have rarely been seen on the island.

One of the eels (yet to be named by you!), has been studied by Dr Simon Westergaard from SARDI and is now due to return to KI where it will be re-incorporated back into the school’s Environmental Studies program.

This fish (Anguilla Australis) is a unique traveller. As soon as it reaches maturity, it stops feeding and swims to sea, where it continues for about 4000km, to spawn in deep waters off the Coral Sea off New Caledonia, Fiji and Indonesia. They do this annually and can live up to 30 years.

In order to celebrate the “Return of the Eel”, Kangaroo Island Community Education invites the community and eel lovers to come to the Asian Market on Friday October 16 from 8.30am to 9.30am at Kingscote Campus.

We shall commemorate the Eel’s return, give it a name and have a good time.
