Five coastal gardens workshops were held recently in community centres across Kangaroo Island. They attracted a total of 80 people eager to learn more about growing plants suited to Kangaroo Island’s soils and environment.
The workshops provided the opportunity for participants to discover the range of attractive native garden plants suited to their locations.
Di Delaine of Rural Solutions SA introduced the principles of garden landscaping with native plants and the advantages of using them over introduced plants. Veronica Bates from the KI NRM Board then provided examples of hardy native plants and also examples of common garden plants to be avoided due to their potential to escape into our native bushland.
A free copy of Coastal Gardens: A Planting Guide for Kangaroo Island is available from the DENR office at 37 Dauncey Street, Kingscote. The guide, originally produced by the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM Board and Rural Solutions SA, has been adapted for Kangaroo Island and provides coastal gardeners with information on using local native plants for attractive, eco-friendly gardens.
When visiting the Office to collect your copy, take the time to look at the bush garden out the front and the display of native plants in the foyer. Enquiries about ordering native tube stock can be made to Veronica Bates on 8553 4444. Funding for the workshops and planting guide was obtained by Eco-Action through the State NRM Community Grants scheme.
