Jellyfish at beaches

02 Feb, 2012 04:16 PM
Kangaroo Island residents have reported more jellyfish and bluebottles (also known as Portuguese man’o’war) on KI beaches this summer.

The Islander has been told of bluebottle sightings and jellyfish stings at Emu Bay, Hanson Bay and Pennington Bay.

A spokeswoman for the Kangaroo Island Natural

Resources Management Board said the office had not received reports of increased jellyfish sightings.

“Jellyfish numbers naturally fluctuate depending on weather and other conditions and commonly occur on our beaches in late summer.

Recent strong winds may have blown jellyfish closer to shore or onto the beach,” she said.

“While not fatal, bluebottle stings are very painful. People should avoid touching them or any other jellyfish. First aid treatment should be sought for stings.”

The Portuguese man’o’war, pictured, is not a jellyfish and its stings should not be treated the same as a jellyfish sting.

Animals washed up on beaches can continue to give a nasty sting for several days after they die.
