KI temptation that money can’t buy

Can you still be friends with your ex? On Kangaroo Island?

Two former couples and two of their new partners from Adelaide tested the theory last weekend.

In a “Temptation KI” competition organised by radio station Nova 91.9, the ex-lovers were brought to Kangaroo Island in what has been branded a marketing coup for the island.

Tourism Kangaroo Island regional manager Tania O’Neil said Kangaroo Island was a destination

many South Australians planned to visit “one day”.

“The hard thing for Tourism Kangaroo Island has always been to make that ‘one day’, today,” Ms O’Neil said.

“Traditionally we have targeted the market by offering package deals and promoting them in partnership with the SA Tourism Commission. While this is effective, it runs the risk of missing a pretty important market - that of Generation X and Y, the under 40s.

“Unfortunately in this market, there is also a perception of Kangaroo Island being a bit boring. We haven’t sold the island to this generation as a place of fun for them to visit with their friends or their partners.

“We want to start telling these generations that KI has come a long way since their school camp days,” Ms O’Neil said.

Nova’s breakfast crew - Fitzy, Claire and Jules - joined the couples on their KI adventure.

They travelled with SeaLink on Saturday morning and arrived at the KI Seafront Resort where they were welcomed by Mayor Jayne Bates before heading off on their brief tour of the island and their romantic lunch at a “surprise location” and stops along the way, including Sunset Winery and KI Spirits.

The day ended with a romance-themed meal at Sorrento’s Restaurant in Penneshaw.

The couples were filmed and their comments taped for playback during the breakfast show.

TKI also has created a new website www.kigetaway.com to capitalise on interest from the station’s listeners.

“The beauty of a campaign like this, is that it attracts interest from other media. The theme of ‘Can you still be friends with your ex’ has caught the attention of a local current affairs show, so we will get additional exposure through that,” Ms O’Neil said.

“This sort of PR is something no amount of advertising could ever buy us,” Ms O’Neill said.

“As for the question, 'Can you still be friends with your ex?'. I think the answer was, yes you can be friends with your ex - but it's not always easy,” Ms O’Neil said.
