KIX-FM is urgently seeking more volunteers for the island’s community radio station.
Station manager Sharon Menz said the station needed volunteers and sponsorship to continue and broaden its range of programs and services.
“It’s a very small group of people keeping the station going at the moment. We need announcers, sponsorship co-ordinators, producers, cleaners, someone who would like to catalogue our music; there are lots of jobs for people who would like to see the station thrive,” she said.
She said training was available for people with an interest.
“We used to have all sorts of programs and we’d like to get back to that,” Ms Menz said.
“In the past we’ve had hip-hop, heavy metal, religious, children’s and ethnic programs.
“Many people say they couldn’t possibly go on radio but it doesn’t have to be that scary.
“And sponsors can get something for their money. We can promote their event or product on air.”
She said people often mistakenly thought the station was government-funded but funding was only available for equipment purchases or for particular programs.
“We need about $10,000 a year realistically to run the station,” Ms Menz said.
“It is a station for the whole community. It is not just for one demographic or particular interest group. There are lots of interesting opportunities for people who can volunteer some time and have some program ideas.
“For example, if we could pay $3000 a year for satellite access we could get programs from other community stations around Australia and people who make programs here could have them broadcast around Australia,” Ms Menz said.
