Palliative care support

09 Dec, 2010 05:00 PM
The Kangaroo Island Cancer Support Group has donated equipment worth more than $8000 to the Kangaroo Island Health Service to improve its palliative care unit.

A portable, foldable bed, which can be transferred to a patient’s home with all the convenience of adjustment of a full hospital bed, cost $4100; an oxygen concentrator which requires no oxygen bottle cost $2,266; a split system air-conditioner will improve comfort for patients at the hospital.

The Low Care bed with pressure care mattress will be used for both cancer and palliative care patients. The bed folds for easy mobility in and out of homes causing the least concern and will increase comfort for the patient.

It reduces the risk of falling out of bed and provides safer care at home for family and carers. A KIHS spokeswoman said the support group had provided help not just in buying equipment but also in education, resources and care for community members and families.

The support group was always looking for new members for positions on the committee, people with craft skills and anyone who could donate even small amounts of time.
