The editor of a leading UK wine publication spent the weekend on Kangaroo Island to research the region for his magazine Decanter.
Guy Woodward was hosted by Nick Hannaford of Lifetime Private Retreats and Nick Dugmore of Kangaroo Island Estate and visited not only some of the island’s leading wineries but also iconic tourist destinations.
Wine Australia reports that Decanter has a readership of 40,000 people. Half of that is in the UK, where it is the country’s most popular wine magazine. The rest of its readership is in the US and Europe. It is preparing an SA wine supplement for its spring edition, sponsored by the state government.
“The visit is purely for research. As editor of the magazine, Guy is responsible for directing the editorial content; deciding the topics to cover, the angles to approach them from, and who should write such features,” Mr Dugmore said.
“Guy’s role is that of scheduling and commissioning the material, not writing it himself. Therefore it is imperative that he is abreast of all the issues affecting the major wine regions, the countries they relate to and the styles of wine they are creating. Australia is of particular interest at the moment, and is attracting a good deal of press.”
Mr Woodward visited Bay of Shoals Wines, The Islander Estate Vineyards, Two Wheeler Creek Wines and Andermel Marron, as well as Admiral’s Arch and remarkable Rocks.
He savoured a five-star lunch of local produce at Lifetime Private Retreats accompanied by Hazy Blur and Kangaroo Island Estate wines.
“Guy was very impressed with the quality of the wine and how different the region was to anything he had seen and believes the potential for this region is huge.
“He was also impressed by marketing ventures such as the Kangaroo Island Estate wine club that is focused on combining holiday experiences (accommodation, adventure, hospitality and travel) with consumption of local wine,” Mr Dugmore said.
