Worker gets $6000 back pay

22 Oct, 2009 04:36 PM
A hospitality worker on Kangaroo Island has been back-paid $6000 after an investigation by the Fair Work Ombudsman found the employee had been short-changed.

A Fair Work inspector investigated the casual employee’s entitlements after receiving a formal complaint alleging underpayment of wages.

While the food and beverage assistant had been provided full board and lodging on-site, it was discovered the worker had not received penalty rates or public holiday loadings.

Fair Work Ombudsman South Australian Director Carey Trundle says the case should serve as a reminder to employers to ensure they are paying minimum entitlements.

Employers can check with the Fair Work Info line on 13 13 94 for the most up-to-date information on wage rates and conditions applying to their staff. The Fair Work Ombudsman website – www.fwo.gov.au – also includes information and templates to help employers better manage employment records and payslips.

Additionally, 11 Best Practice Guides have been developed to assist employers make better use of the provisions of the Fair Work Act and better understand other aspects of national workplace laws.

Ms Trundle says educating and assisting workers and employers about their respective workplace rights and obligations is a key part of the Agency’s role.

The Fair Work Ombudsman has offices in Adelaide, Mount Gambier and Port Augusta.

Last financial year SA inspectors recovered more than $2 million for 1015 workers who had been underpaid.

The Fair Work Ombudsman promotes harmonious, productive and co-operative workplaces.
