Adult Sail Training started last Saturday morning at the Kangaroo Island Yacht Club with perfect conditions for learners and five eager participants, Louise Snowball, David Foreman, Geoff Nutt, Jenny Fraser and Maria Morgan took to the water under Chief Instructor Scott Morgan and Volunteers Trish Van der Linden, David Cockshell, Ashley Waldeck and Ron Hall.
The Sail Training will continue for the next three weeks and people may still come and attend.
In the afternoon, 1 AC Catamaran, 2 sailboards, 3 Lasers, 4 Pacersand 3 Holdfasts, a very small fleet of thirteen boats in total competed in an All Boats start for the Vice Commodore’s Trophy.
The breeze of 10 knots coming from the North East North made for a most pleasant day’s sail with some interesting finishes among the individual classes. Tate Lovering and Ella Buick in “BobbyDazzla” lead for most of the Holdy Race but was overtaken by both “Vampire” Luke Faint and Luke Mackie and “Pee Wee” Frank and Nina Colman who went on to win the race, so well done to the newies.
A very close tussle all race between Patrick Kildea in “She’s a Witch” and Rick Southgate in “Otters Pocket”.
Patrick led all race by a very small margin until just before the finish line when Rick overtook him to win by half a boat length. Kate Faint and Louise King sailed tandem on radial rigged laser “Beetle Power” and Patto realised she should have put a full rig sail onfor them in the light conditions.
Good to see four Pacers on the water to keep Ron Hall and Jenny Fraser in “Blue Oyster” company, but the wily old fox outsailed the other four to win the Pacers. New sailor James Snowball had his first taste of racing as a crew for Trish vanderLinden and Scott Morgan took out Geoff Nutt who had a his very first sail that morning and learnt so quickly he ended up having a go at skippering “Tenacious” got a bit worried when he tossed that he might sail into them anchored on the finish line.
Novice skipper Andrew Bigwood skippered the other Pacer with his wife, experienced sailor Sue as crew. Sue, however, was giving many instructions to Andrew on how to do it and rewarding him with a quick kiss when he got it right. Reminds me of the saying : “I am the skipper of this boat and I have my wife’s permission to say so”.
Two sailboards opted to sail around the Holdie Course! What’s wrong with the adult course? consequently finishing very early. Jenni Harris has lost her full length wetsuit, if any one has taken it home by mistake, she would really appreciate its return.
