That’s what happens when boys with expensive toys and bottomless pockets throw caution to the winds and go out “to have fun” in winds only fit for windsurfers. Four very determined Laser sailors, hell-bent on sailing the championship resail in the absence of Tim Frears (who must be laughing his head off) convinced Viking to set up a course for them while the older and wiser Tenacious crew Ron Hall and Maggie Patterson eyed off the windy seas and stayed ashore.
The first casualty Steve Kempster in “Moonshine” didn’t even make the blue line as his sail strop at the top of the mast broke and his sail fell down. He told us he was tempted to get another sail and try again but the best birthday present he got was the decision to remain ashore. Many ditches eventuated and Peter Lovering stated the “wind was really strong out there, but it was fun”. His wife has other ideas.
Twenty-two minutes was the longest any of the three lasted, they all managed two legs before disaster struck one after the other on the reaching leg to the home buoy and their woes took place in full view of the spectators at the Yacht Club. The first to go was Ants Harris in “Roxby V” who ditched by the home buoy and when he uprighted his boat the mast was broken in half .
Followed shortly by Simon Lovering in “Pale Rider”, seen drifting helpless and steerless as he had lost his rudder.
Next was Peter Lovering in “Gauntlet” who ditched and broke his new second-hand mast four weeks after he broke the last mast. New ones cost a cool $1100! He also managed to break his centre board and somehow filled his bulkhead up with water. The comment from “Viking” was priceless: “he was running along the deck like a little monkey”. So, no results this week, DNF for all Lasers.
The lone windsurfer Russell Colman was having a ball but decided to come ashore as “what was the point, I didn’t have a class and “Viking” could come ashore”. Please note, a typo error in the Team Sailing report stated that “personnel are coming from Victor Harbor to run the event”. It is being run by the KIYC Team Sailing Parents with some help from other visiting parents from both Meningie and Victor Harbor.
