Juniors
Kingscote v Parndana
Saturday morning saw a battle between two of the younger sides and it was great to see all the kids out there enjoying themselves. Kingscote battled first with their top order a lot more solid this week, the best was Sam Lewis 25, K Bell 20, L Virgo 12 and H Zealand 10.
The highlight of the day had to be Cori Kelly destroying Kingscote’s lower order taking a hat-trick. She restricted them to 113 runs and ended up with 3 for 1 off 21 over. You go, girl!
Parndana started well but struggled after the top four and ended up falling short on 84 runs. Kingscote’s best bowlers were S Hissey 1 / 1 off 2 overs and B Niemann 1/3 off 2 overs. Parndana’s best batters were D Clifford 14, M Kelly, 10 S Horjus 10.
Western Districts v MacGillivray
The young Saints were able to improve on their good form with a convincing win over their close rivals MacGillivray. Batting first they were able to compile 123 off their 33 overs for the loss of 5 wickets. L Boyle, K Hammat and L Florance continued their good seasons and retired while all batsmen are showing improvement each week given their keenness. MacGillivray bowled well and only gave up 11 wides which is a commendable effort, best bowlers being the Havelberg brothers and J Hinton with 1 wicket each, Jess Lovering fielding very well.
The Saints followed up strongly in the field by bowling in good areas to take the top order cheaply, a good slips catch to J Halloran is rare to see in junior grades. Good run outs and backing up with R Halloran keen to get into everything and only bowling 16 wides themselves was a huge improvement. C Helyar a good innings unlucky to be out for 19. Played in great spirit, well done boys and girls.
Seniors
Kingscote v Parndana
Kingscote finally won a toss breaking a six-game drought and electing to bat and starting well with Morrison belting a 6 off the first ball to get things rolling. Bowler Z Trethewey had other ideas however claiming the wicket of Ramsey later in the over. Morrison and Butler then put on 94 partnership and looking well set before Morrison hauled out to mid on and Butler followed soon after giving Routley his second. Ness took a great legside catch behind the stumps to dismiss young Laighton Virgo. Late hitting from Mark ‘Ping Ping’ Virgo and Josh Bates put the home side in a good spot after 45 overs with 225 on the slow oval. Sam Horjus bowling well for the visitors.
Parndana came out looking solid and punishing anything short and wide seeing out the first 10 overs before ‘Plums’ Clifford feathered one to the keeper off Green for the breakthrough. Morrisson got rid of Ness for a well played 33 and Josh Bates’ leggies were destroying the middle order up the other end with Zac Trethewey the only batsmen putting up a fight with a superb 71. Ramsey cleaned up the tail to see the home team over the line.
Western Districts v MacGillivray
MacGillivray batted first and did well to face out their 45 overs after losing early wickets, M Lovering leading the recovery with 88 well supported by P Collins (31) to total 150 runs. Best bowlers for the Saints were young L Coulsen (2 for 21 off 10 overs) taking the step up to seniors in his stride by bowling in great areas, and the young P Johnson contributing as usual with 2 for 25 off 8 overs.
Saints replied in aggressive fashion only losing 2 wickets to pass the target in the 23rd over, good return to form by M Geursen (57). Better bowlers for MacGillivray were C Bolto (1 for 33 off 5 overs) and P Collins bowling tight lines without success.
Over & Out
Wisanger v Hog Bay
Nails were shortened. Captains couldn’t watch. Catches were dropped. Wickets were falling. It was the way the Panthers won the game.
Hosting Hog Bay on Saturday conditions were fine. Panthers won the toss and batted first and were in trouble early, being 2 for 36 off 10 overs. But great partnerships later in the innings saw the Panthers pile on 182 from their 45 overs. Tony Bell who blew off the lavender to top score with 49 was dropped twice with great support by Chad ‘Airport Transfer’ Wyatt, 39 and Mark ‘Have a Laugh’ Chapman, 27 not out. Great bowling by Heath Gurney again in the game – 4 for 41 and Ken ‘Oyster’ Rowe – 2 for 11. Were those dropped catches crucial?
Quick runs was the plan for Hog Bay racing to 116 off 20 overs, but losing 5 wickets wasn’t in the plan. Heath Gurney again in the game with a quick 71. The Panthers looked down but not out.
Ken Rowe made 19 and was the key, scoring freely to get Hog Bay to 143 with only 39 runs to win before losing his head and letting one go to bowl him. Then the Panthers hit back with 3 quick wickets. Once again Tony Bell bowled well capturing 4 for 41 off 8 overs and great support from Ben ‘Real Estate’ Wilks 3 for 32 from 10 overs.
Hog Bay was 9 for 172, needing only 10 runs to win. The Chris ‘Butter Fingers’ Smith dropped an absolute sitter on the boundary, Hog Bay needed only five runs to win, but stump to stump bowling from Mike ‘Video 2000’ Swayne clean bowled the last batsman.
Hog Bay all out for 176 off 36 overs.
Panthers won by five runs. All drinks were on Chris Smith who also made no runs.
You know what they say “catches win matches, dropped ones don’t”. Well, that was true just ask Hog Bay.
A good game with lots of wickets, and played in good spirits. Well done everybody involved.
Juniors
Wisanger v Hog Bay
A glorious day at Wisanger saw the Panthers win the toss and send Hog Bay in to bat. Solid batting by Jack Gurney, Ty Martain & Eric Cook all making their 20 with Sam Gurney hanging around and making 18. Good tight bowling from the Wisanger boys towards the end of the innings, with A Florance, T Thomas and J Church, all taking 2 wickets each. Hog Bay finished on 135 runs.
Wisanger’s run chase started well, with Bridget Patterson & Liam Sampson making 46 off the first 6 overs, both reaching 20, followed by a good partnership from J Munro 19 & J Treble. Adam Florance batted well for 18 and the rest of the order guided them to the target. T Zeeman picked up 2 wickets for Hog Bay.
A game played in good spirits with consistent fielding from both sides.
