On what was a fantastic day for Kangaroo Island Football, Kingscote has triumphed over a gallant Western Districts in the U15 Colt’s Carnival on Saturday.
The Ozone Seafront Hotel proudly sponsors the yearly event that is jointly run between the South Adelaide Football Club and the KIFL.
After an intriguing round robin competition in which all clubs battled hard, the grand final lived up to all expectations with Kingscote winning by the smallest possible margin.
After dominating the first half, Western Districts’ three-goal half-time lead was eventually overrun in the dying minutes.
Final scores Kingscote 3.3.21 to Western Districts 3.2.20
Following the grand final, Alex Burrowes and Rob Bollenhagen of the South Adelaide Football Club presented a perpetual trophy to the victorious Kingscote colts.
Best players during the carnival included Rory Lovering from Kingscote, Dudley United’s Brent Kirby and Western Districts’ Luke Hacker.
All boys were presented with a South Adelaide polo shirt after the game.
Following the U15 carnival, it was then time for the island to be divided and two teams represent the five teams in an East v West format.
Jamie Helyar and Peter Philp coached Easts, while Wests had Ricky Morris and Ted Speed at the helm.
In what was a fast paced encounter from the outset, Easts burst out of the blocks with five first half goals to Kingscote spearhead Luke Ramsey.
Following the main break, Easts continued to control the game all the way to the final siren.
Final score were Easts 14.5.89 to Wests 9.5.59.
Better players for the game were Sam Short and Josh Graham from Western Districts, while Paul Green and Leroy Johnson of Kingscote fame were outstanding for the Easts.
Paul Green was eventually judged best a field and received a $100 food and beverage voucher from Jimmy Deane’s Entertainment at the South Adelaide Football Club.
Special thanks must go to the representatives of all five clubs who assisted to make the day the day it was and also to League President Heath Gurney and Secretary Tony Nolan for their tireless efforts.
The focus now turns to round one, which kicks off in a fortnight.
From what we have seen today, the future looks bright for KI football.
