KI hosts regional titles

25 Feb, 2010 04:36 PM
Twenty-five potential team sailors, our largest Squad yet, have turned up on Thursdays for training and only the second training we have been able to get on the water as the previous nights have been in excess of 18 knots and the cut-off wind speed for Team Sailing is 18 knots, so we have had theory sessions.

Last Thursday senior skippers Tayla Lovering, Khalil Hadland, Josh Thomas and Jae Tyley took out four boats and all had a great time reaching up and down the blue line with the Coach Boat and Tenacious in hot pursuit with the rest of the sailors patiently waiting their turn for a sail in the ‘screaming reach’ conditions.

We are delighted that three students from each of the other campuses Penneshaw and Parndana have joined our ranks. This interest speaks well for the future of our team sailing.

We have a wonderful band of parents with boat licences willing to help Ron Hall with “Tenacious” acting as the start boat while Tim Frears, our YSA-accredited coach teaches and coaches from the school rubber duck, after a beach run and warm up in waist-deep water.

The South East Regional Team Sailing Selection is programmed for March 12 and 13 and will be hosted this year by the Kangaroo Island Yacht Club. The contest for the two teams to go to States, to be held in Port Lincoln during the April School Holidays, will be played out between the Victor Harbor High and KICE teams. Meningie ran out of water and will have some students wishing to compete in composite teams with other schools from within our Region.

The parent volunteers are hard at work on their various planning committees to ensure the smooth running of the Regatta. Darryl Frears is coming from Port Lincoln to act as the RO, personnel are coming from Victor Harbor to run the event and Ian Porteous will be acting as the Beach Marshall. Ex-team sailors from Meningie, Victor Harbor and here will be acting as umpires and several dads have loaned their boats to accommodate the umpires. Ben Tyley has kindly loaned his crayboat “Halcyon” to act as the spectator craft.

The Squad is comprised of Jae Tyley, Donna Ross, Josh Thomas, Kaitlin Taylor, Khalil Hadland, Tayla Lovering, Lucy Kempster, Annie Johnson, Eliza Sheridan, Kate Faint, Andrew Edwards, Louise King, Brandt Steyn, Zoe Sheridan, Oliver van der Linden, Kiara Hadland, Hugo Muecke, Luke Faint, Elijah Porter-Baines, Charlie Riggs, Emma Riggs, Natasha Willson, Jed Sheridan, Jacob van der Linden, Josh Bennett.

For the past four years our KICE sailing team has represented the state in the National Team Sailing Championship. ,We need to sail hard and aim high to win a position at Port Lincoln.

Our Pacers and their sails are ageing and the Team Sailing Committee has been busily seeking sponsors to replace the six sets of sails comprising a white reefed main and blue or yellow jib with a large sponsor’s logo on the main, each set costs $1000. Maggie Patterson
