Kingscote v Stokes Bay
Oh, what a fickle lot we are! Every week in Kingscote we complain about our prevailing south-east winds.
This week there was no wind; absolutely beautiful for tennis. What’s this I hear? It’s hot, it’s sweltering, my feet are burning. “Wimps”, I say from the sidelines. “It’s beautiful sitting in the shade.” One comment heard towards the end of the day: “Let’s make a rule you can’t move.” Seriously, it was a hot day.
It’s always good to play Stokes Bay, a really friendly lot of players who always play in good spirit.
A lopsided scoreline eventuated which doesn’t reflect the quality of the games played as Stokes Bay was missing the entire Stanton crowd. The best games played include the top doubles with Stokes winning in a tie breaker. Nic and Tayla had a good struggle and Tania and Sarah had a tightly fought game. Well done to Sarah, borrowing shoes, racquet and so on as she was just visiting and hadn’t played in 14 years.
A special mention must go to ‘experienced campaigners’, the Kelly brothers Hugh and Bryan with the newest “Kangaroo Island Citizen of the Year” gaining sibling bragging rights.
An enjoyable day was had, even sitting on the sidelines. More beer next time, I suggest
Western Districts v
Dudley United
On a very hot afternoon at Western Districts the home team had to call on some favours to get a team filled.
Dudley also were a few down and luckily Brody Florance was there to fill in at the last minute, still in his cricket whites.
After the doubles it was two sets a piece but that was the last sets WD would win in the heat all day. Barry Wheaton and Whiskers had a very close tussle with the experience of Barry getting him over the line.
Tracey Downing who was pushed up to number two showed great fighting qualities to get three games off Ken Follett proving how consistent she is against any opponent.
Coby Helyar after a slow start was down against Darren Morris who started strongly but youth finally won out in a very evenly matched battle.
Jody Florance was too consistent against Damien Florance who would have preferred to be out fishing I’m sure. Brody Florance won his first ever tennis game and at 11 has a natural talent and was too good for Sharee who was also playing her first fill in game.
The reverse doubles in sweltering heat were all won by Dudley with Rachel Peckover and Jody proving too steady against the two Damiens in a very entertaining doubles match, to end the day.
