Locals flip out for karts

Kart-mania hit Kangaroo Island over the weekend when 140 karts from the mainland headed over to the Rock for the annual State Title Championships.

It was a great turnout and the weather was absolutely brilliant!! It couldn’t have been any better than it was.

The State Titles are run as 4 heats and a final with 11 classes represented with some of Australia’s best drivers in attendance.

On Saturday the 31st the racing began with the young junior lights first up, we had Lucy and Sam (Normous) Kempster, with their nerves racing in a large field of hungry drivers ready to race. Lucy’s nerves proving too hard to control with her spinning out on the third lap of the first race, as the weekend went on the nerves definitely settled with Normous improving each race. He started 12th in the final and made his way to tenth, Lucy was doing well and was next to Sam in the final in 11th position she was full of determination and battled hard jumping 6 places in the race and finishing well earned 5th.

In the Statesmans we had big bad Bob Cronin representing K.I he didn’t have much luck with the Scrutineers having a kart 10kg under weight, he now holds the state record for the longest time to have a kart pass scrutineering. Following in the footsteps of Eddy the eagle from Winter Olympics Bob received great crowd support.

In the 125cc lights we had Jack Buick and Steve Zealand. Jack’s first race he was a little rattled after realising that the person in front of him in first position was actually a girl, Jack also had a fairly frightening roll over getting stuck under the kart, he managed to kick the kart off and walking away with only minor injuries. Zig Zag Zealand had a slow start to the weekend struggling with kart setup he finally cracked a good setup enabling him to battle his way forward in the pack.

In the 125cc heavies we had Steve Kempster and Darren Barnes, Steve’s first race was an absolute blinder running second until the very last bend when he blew out a rear tyre!!

He was lucky enough not to get a DNF bunny hopping his way over the line finishing tenth, ultimately costing him a possible podium finish for the weekend. Steve was a very consistent racer but didn’t quite get there finishing 5th for the weekend the highest Kangaroo Island place getter. Darren wasn’t as lucky with a few spinouts, but after all Darren was the president and had a lot on his plate so he definitely had a few distractions.

In the KT lights we had James (Stiffler) Ridley trying his best out on the track but being a little out of practice, he was unfortunate blowing a motor but with the help of the K.I gang a replacement motor was sourced and he was up and racing again.

On behalf of the Kangaroo Island go-kart club we would like to say thanks to all the locals who came out to support the event. We would also like to thank Linda and her lovely canteen staff, Brad Jamieson as our commentator for the weekend, Anton for driving the quad bike and recovering karts from the track, Bill Walden for putting 16 years of endless effort into the club, the Kangaroo Island Motor Club for all their help with the flagging, all the people who drove the water trucks and graders and everyone else who helped out to make the weekend what it was.

And a big thanks again to all our sponsors.
