A Grade
Kingscote v Dudley United
Good conditions but an average ground greeted an undermanned Dogs and Eagles team at Dog Park as a lead up to the semi final where these teams are likely to face off again.
After the last time they met where Dudley dominated the first quarter, the young dogs were determined not to make the same mistake again and they didn’t. Scud found his touch early as did Zac Edwards who was penetrating the forward so well as Michael Condo gave Dudley a boost before the first break but Dogs up by two goals at the quarter.
The Eagle brigade fought back well after the break with the Willson boys killing in the middle and Asplin elusive up forward. The visitors drew even and then powered ahead to be up by 8 pts at the half.
Knowing the experience of Dudley would prevail in the second half, the young Dogs could ill afford to come out not switched on and they didn’t with Rory Lovering blitzing his opponent on the wing, Matt Ward running amok around the ground and Greeny owning the back lines. Bullock and Donaghy for Dudley were fighting strong and kept them in it but the Dogs regained the lead to be up at the last change.
The last quarter was a good old-fashioned slog with Clayton finding the ball and Howard being moved up forward and Dudley got back within a goal and an all too familiar story seemed like it was unfolding again. The young Dogs fought back though and once Boomer kicked a nail in the coffin goal it was all over. Both teams proving it will be a semi not to be missed!
Congratulations to Adam Robinson and Peter Philp (coach) on reaching 100 games. It is a significant milestone for a player and an extraordinary one for a coach. Well done!
Reserves
Kingscote v Dudley United
In the reserves match, Dudley won the toss and an even first quarter saw the Dogs up by a point, Michael Ward and David Florance both racking up possessions. Kingscote turned it on in the second, Twiggy Clark a focal point up forward with Ryan Christophers also damaging, his brilliant left foot snap putting them 4 goals up at the main break.
The Eagles came back with some cleaner ball use and big grabs by Neil Stoeckel, and solid work down back from Turtle Pearce and Declan Howard.
Kingscote’s defenders were also hard at it, inspired by Lee Brown, and as Wardy, Sam Lewis and the midfield regained momentum they peppered the goal front, but with frustratingly little effect on the scoreboard. Jack Buick, Ralph Byles and Josh Harris were all having a big impact, breaking the lines to send the ball forward, but having dominated most of the play the Dogs were up by just 3-10 at 3/4 time, and when Shane Weger opened the last with an Eagles goal, the green and yellows were still in the hunt. Kingscote re-applied the pressure however, a couple of lapses from the Eagles leading to 50m frees which resulted in goals, and it was a Dog Day Afternoon. Two late goals to Stoeckel and Montgomerie improved the margin for the visitors but it was an emphatic win to the Blood and Tars.
Senior Colts
Kingscote v Dudley United
The senior colts match was one-sided on the scoreboard but an entertaining game to watch, both sides putting together some good passages. Dudley proved far too strong however, keeping the Hounds goalless for most of the game while piling on 12 of their own. Juniors were also a good spectacle, the young Pups getting over the Eaglets by 3 goals.
