Association Match – Hills Football League v KIFL
After last year’s disappointing no-show from Hills League, KI once again fronted up on enemy territory at Echunga for a rematch after the close encounter of 2006.
This time the islanders were boosted by a junior squad of U-16’s to take on a strong Hills U-15’s team.
KI started well, first kick from Pharmacy Medallist Zak Edwards sending the young Roos forward, but a rushed behind the result.
Hills responded with a goal from Brodie Topham, soon matched when Rhys Lovering passed to Luke Hacker, onto Rory Lovering, to Chris Chirgwin to goal.
KI was looking good.
Fountain-Palmer working hard for Hills.
Zak Edwards on fire with a goal from the pocket.
Tackling was fierce from both sides as Hills answered with a good mark and goal from Josh Harris.
John Sam Watters strong in defence for the Roos.
Second quarter and after a Hills rushed behind, Chris Chirgwin kicked a top goal out of the pack.
Quick reply through Harris, with Watters, Damon Tyley and Jed Martain working hard in defence, until Lang Willmot scored for the Roos to see them in front 4.2 to 2.4, but Hills were surging.
They rattled on three quick goals to finish the first half and suddenly KI was 10 points down.
An unsteady start to the third quarter saw Hills first to find the goals, Harris again doing the damage, while a frozen KI tried hard to stem the tide.
Zak Edwards was performing strongly all over the ground, but his team went to the last change four goals down.
The young Roos lifted in the last quarter, Rhys Lovering inspiring with a couple of goals and Will Crump terrific in defence, but with Topham and Harris combining well Hills did enough to hold on.
Zak’s last goal from the boundary line gave KI the quarter but not the game, Hills winning 9.12 to 7.4.
Best on ground for the home side were Jethro Fountain-Palmer and Josh Harris, while Zak Edwards was KI’s best, along with Rory Lovering and John Sam Watters.
The A Grade match started quickly with KI goaling in the first half minute, Luke Ramsey slotting one through from centre half forward, but just four kicks later Hills had replied with two of their own through captain Dylan Bingos and the elusive Caine Jinnette.
Another major from Jinnette and KI looked in real trouble, but a great knock-on from Roos big man Brodie Howard found Clayton Willson, he kicked immediately to Scud who quickly found Nev Clarke on the goal line.
The Roos came back, Clay getting touches all over the ground, Mark Gilbert tough in the backlines and captain Craig Turner winning the hard ball.
A set shot from Scud went wide, Hills regained control when Nathan Hart goaled from 40m then Keith McClelland scored off the deck, and KI were frustrated, having had a lot of the play but unable to exert pressure on the scoreboard. Hills up by five goals.
Second quarter and the Roos skipper found his vice captain for Clayto to convert.
Howard was winning the ruck duels, but Hills’ close in ball work and quick hands were gaining them the advantage.
Brock Rothe was damaging for the yellow and blacks and Andrew Minne was effective up forward but gutsy play by Shane Matthews and Josh Graham was keeping the Roos in touch.
Another goal to Jinnette started a run for Hills though, and they finished the half full of run and eight goals up.
The third quarter opened promisingly, as Clayto scored in the first minute, but the reply was quick as Hills kept the scoreboard ticking over with goals to Hart, Habner and captain Dylan Bingos. It was all yellow.
Josh Lade stepped in to halt the flow, giving off to the captain who once again found Clayton Willson to kick truly, but KI were under siege.
Hills quick hands at ground level and passes behind to set up play were hurting the Roos badly.
Hard at it backman Noxy Taylor limped off to add to their woes, but a goal to Quarter gave some hope as they prepared for the last break.
Hills opened the last with a goal to Goody, quickly answered as Paul Green booted a six pointer.
The Roos lifted, another major as Yacca Matthews kicked a beauty from the pack, a shepherd from the captain allowed Nev Clarke to goal and Quarter chipped it himself with a great snap from the boundary.
The margin was still over five goals in favour of the home side but the KI crowd were starting to think a miracle was in the offing.
They were soon fuming however over some questionable umpiring decisions, and Hills quick, physical approach saw them back in the driver’s seat.
Rothe and Bingos continuing to find plenty of the ball and Habner booting a couple more to clinch the result and claim the Brian Tiggemann Shield. Final scores were Hills 20.14 to KI 10.4.
Best for Hills Caine Jinnette and Brock Rothe, while for KI Craig Turner played an outstanding captains’ game and Josh Graham and Shane Matthews also played well. KI coach Jamie Helyar commended Hills on a quick, clean and skilled team, and congratulated the KI players on a gutsy effort.
Hopefully a return match on the island will give the boys another crack.
The KIFL would like to thank Hills Football League, players, officials and supporters from all clubs, and trip sponsors SeaLink, Genesis Buses, Ozone Seafront Hotel, Elders KI, South Adelaide Football Club and False Cape Wines.
A Grade played May 31
Parndana 15.6-96 d Dudley United 9.12-66
Parndana was too good for Dudley United at Penguin Park on Saturday blowing the 2008 premiership race wide open and exacting revenge on a shell shocked Eagles side by 30 points.
Dudley began strongly through “the brick with eyes” Neville Clark who began prominently from the centre bounce.
Some quick clearances from the Eagles allowed Adam Waller to put them a goal up inside a minute. From there Parndana rallied led by defenders Josh Lade, Ashley Ness and Damian Davis.
Damian Trethewey was back to his best sweeping across halfback and setting up play. He had plenty of mates and none more than his brothers Nathan and Zac who are in career best form.
Zac’s run from the wing and aerial skills were a feature of the day with the young Trethewey finishing with four goals.
The story of the day was coup signing David Westbrook. The 2006 SANFL premiership player and 2003 Yorke Peninsula Mail Medalist played a polished game at Centre Half Forward and the lift from Parndana’s young players was obvious.
Without the obvious match up of Matthew Scarlett, Reece “Joey” Tonkin was given the job to stem his influence and produced one of his best games this year.
The excitement around Westbrook carried on long into the night with new wife and Parndana local Becky Westbrook presented with the keys to the city and appointed to the head recruiting position.
In a hard fought battle for four quarters of football it was Parndana’s accuracy and delivery into the forward line proved the difference. Tom Wurst and Michael Mills were working well up forward and the three talls just proved too many options for the Parndana midfield to aim at.
After half time Roosters coach Ted Speed wound the recliner back and enjoyed the game. His on ball brigade of Luke Wood, Nathan, Damian and Zac Trethewey and Shane Matthews ran the game out and it was hard to find a passenger.
In the home coach’s box Sir Jamie Helyar’s white board looked as if Mr Squiggle had taken too much Ritalin. Clayton Willson was outstanding for Dudley swapping between centre and half forward. He was not without help but Dudley struggled for any fluency. Brodie Howard, Rhett and Brad Willson, Neville Clark and Adam Buick were finding plenty of the ball but Parndana had answers all over the ground.
While the scoreboard showed Dudley’s inaccuracy it was Parndana who looked the goods all day.
The Roosters ran out 30 point winners and consolidated second position on the ladder.
For Dudley it’s a long week of goal kicking practice as the clubs break for the June long weekend before taking on Western Districts at home.
