Western Districts v Macgillivray

Saints secured a comfortable win against the hawks on Saturday for the grand final rematch in wintry conditions.

Macgillivray batted its allotted 45 overs to compile a competitive total of 179 on the slow Gosse oval.

B Willson looked the best with 35, well supported by I Bolto (27) and P Collins clearing the front foot and swinging hard for 30. Saints consistently bowling in good areas to limit scoring opportunities.

Western Districts reply started well with Guerson (54) and Johnson (31) getting away to a quick start. J Nadebaum and B Lock steering the Saints to a six-wicket win, B Lock (30 not out) with his best batting performance to date.

Western Districts v Macgillivray

Young Saints and Hawks met at Gosse in cool but calm conditions on Saturday for the season opener.

A Anderson and new recruit L Coulson started their seasons well both making their runs comfortably, K Hammat and H Gloyne looking solid also.

The mosquito fleet at Gosse had expanded over the winter months with 16 players in all turning up for the game (and a few to return), trying to give everyone a decent go was an unfamiliar problem for the Saints coaches.

As such, many of the middle and lower order batters were dragged off the oval kicking and screaming when having to retire with little opportunity.

Alana Nolan the best of the Hawks bowlers with 2 for 1 off 3 overs. Saints reaching 111 for the loss of 4 wickets, a competitive total on the slow Gosse oval.

The Saints bowling started well with the Hawks’ top 3 batters going cheap, L Coulson bowling a great spell, A Anderson and N Hacker also finding good areas.

The Hawks middle order steadied with B Wickham, G Weatherspoon and C Helyar taking advantage of the relentless mosquito attack to reach retirement.

A very tight game ended with MacGillivray just getting over the line, losing 7 wickets for 116 off their 33 overs. Great improvement by Western Districts who will be busy with catching practice this week.
