Parndana V Western

District

Expectations were high for the clash at Parndana between the two top teams despite the very wet conditions; it was fine and sunny for the start .

W.D won the toss and chose to kick to the southern end favoured by a solid breeze.

The ground had been chopped up by the earlier B grade game and weather conditions earlier had produced a mud patch in the southern goal.

However, the initial ruck duals indicated plenty of leaps in the big men and some hard running early on appeared to be the order. Chewy drew first blood for the roosters by kicking a major off the ground.

Parndana looked dangerous as a clearance from the centre though young guns Hahns Sullivan and Ben Gaskin failed to make the distance but it finally ended only in a scrambled point.

Trev Weatherspoon was beginning to show up and his experience and cool head were important in setting up play for W.D.

The ball began to get slippery and heavier as the quarter progressed. Quarter time scores Parndana 1-1 W.D 1-2

Rowsell and Brad May were having some good duals in the ruck. Willmott applying a strong tackle for W.D saw him score the first major of the term.

Parndana had plenty of the ball up forward, but played into the dead pocket only to see W.D hold up and clear through Buck, Lock, Whale and Weatherspoon. Again Hahns Sullivan for Parndana sent the ball forward, this time Tim May through strong work was able to convert.

Parndana was being frustrated by close body pressure from Wonks and they continued to play the dead pocket to no avail.

A forward thrust down the eastern side by W.D saw Dan May for Parndana intercept the ball and a long bomb across to the fat side of the half forward line enabled Goaty to take a good grab and register his 2nd goal for the quarter. Half Time scores P 3-2 W.D 2-3

Rain fell in the third quarter got underway. Conditions now were getting more difficult and Parndana were beginning to make errors.

Dools was getting his hands on the ball at centre bounces and throw ups, but the rock solid W.D style was enabling them to get it going their way.

They were steady and well balanced, while Parndana appeared to lose their footing, second grab the ball and their hand passes were misdirected.

The game had closed up, and Parndana made errors that were starting to cost. A prolonged scramble in the mud in front of the southern goals finally resulted in two flags for W.D and the ¾ time scores showed a 3 goal quarter to the saints 5-5 to Parndana 3-3.

Conditions for the last quarter were ordinary and Parndana needed 3 straight kicks to ensure they stayed undefeated.

It was tight, tough and ugly with plenty of action at ground level. Parndana had the ball in their 50 metre arc for 90% of the quarter.

The conversation amongst the spectators had turned onto how many times they had been bogged during the week or what were the chances of getting any lamb marking done this year. Eventually the siren sounded and W.D had won 5-7 to 3-3.

Second quarter Wonks started well again.

Parndana seemed to be matching it in the mid field but struggling up forward.

Final quarter Rooster’s not having a great day and Wonks kicked the first one again.

Rooster’s not giving up and applying good pressure in defence which resulted in Parndana’s first goal to Hahn’s. Wonks kept attacking and Lloyd ended up on the end of a Rooster mistake for the easiest of goals.

Even contest for sometime. Rooster’s never giving up despite the huge score difference.
