Returned from his racing trip to the United States and Canada, downhill skater Daniel Hawes, of Kingscote, was happy with what the month-long trip had to offer him.
Participating at two races, the Downhill Corral at Cathlamet, Oregon and Maryhill Festival of Speed at Goldendale, Washington, he had a rewarding experience with racing with the world’s best skateboarders and some of the best hills in the U.S.
Cathlamet Downhill Corral was in the centre of a small town and generated a lot of positive interest among locals.
Maryhill Festival of Speed is part of the world circuit of downhill skateboarding. Maryhill Loops Road an iconic track with smooth surface and picturesque scenery. The four-day event provided the riders with lots of practice runs, tight competition and many new acquaintances from all over the world.
Daniel was pleased with his results, placing 8th out of 50-odd riders at Cathlamet, and 92nd out of close to 200 participants at Maryhill.
In addition to the races, skating with the welcoming crew of long boarders both in the U.S. and Canada were the highlights of the trip.
Soon, the International Gravity Sports Association (IGSA) World Cup takes place in Bathurst. Daniel is looking forward to getting together with the other long boarders again and to skating one of Australia’s most challenging hills.
