Western Districts v Wisanger
The opening of the A grade match was always going to be a beauty. Play started quickly with Wisanger gaining the first goal within two minutes of the ball being bounced. Western Districts kept firing the ball at Wisanger’s defence. Yogi and Rick Morris both playing hard footy. Both teams only able to get minors on the scoreboard for their efforts. A dampening rain spread across the ground making play difficult. Andrew Fogden finally making a
blistering pace put a goal on the scoreboards for Western
Districts. Damon Tyley for Wisanger was giving his all. At the break Western Districts was up by a goal.
Second quarter started with both sides anxious to make things happen. Darren ‘Doogs’ Morris got the first one away then his brother Rick Morris kept it in the family and scored another. Wisanger’s No. Six quickly got his boot to the ball and kicked a reply soon after, Roy got another to give Wisanger what they needed. Josh Graham took a great mark to give Wonks another. This was turning out to be a fantastic clash with Wisanger scoring once more. Third quarter started with both sides eager to steal those valuable points away from each other.
Daniel Platten showed
talent getting in a few touches in the opening minutes of the all important second half. Wisanger’s Yogi drew first blood with a good kick. As the conditions steadily got worse the ball had turned into a slippery piece of soap – making play really difficult for both sides. Wisanger got one more to be one point behind Western Districts. Then play turned and Rick Morris goaled another making this game a very exciting one.
Last quarter was geared up to be a ripper with both sides going in hard wanting to win this one.Wazza from Wisanger was playing tough footy trying to get hold of the ball, the game was turning out to be point for point.
As the crowd under the shelter got louder and louder the rain finally eased up and Wisanger’s forwards were determined to get the ball into their goals. With 10 minutes to go before the siren sounded the scores were tight. Wonkies had kicked a quick two getting them in front. Rick Morris starred once again in the forward line giving his team another.
Wisanger certainly weren’t lying down giving it back to Westies at every opportunities. Andrew Fogden was making a big impact on this one as was Kyle Stead for Wisanger. Both sides played an awesome game of footy, very entertaining to watch. Wonks winning in the end.
Kingscote v Dudley United
Perfect conditions for football as the hounds met Dudley on Saturday with second spot up for grabs and both teams with key players absent. Kingscote got the ball rolling early through Sam Lewis before Dudley’s full forward kicked two quick ones. Kingscote then got a couple back to be three goals to two up at quarter time.
The second quarter was scrappy, Kingscote having most of the play but unable to capitalise on the scoreboard. Scud nailed a couple for the Dogs while Clayton Wilson and Jesse Wilkinson were having a great battle in the centre. Kingscote kicked away in the third quarter with Thompson and 100-gamer Hendo presenting well at half-forward while Lynke for Dudley was giving it his all. The Dogs up by six goals at the last break.
A comeback looked to be on the cards when Dudley snared the first two of the last quarter but when scud kicked his 6th the game was over, the home side winning byfive5 goals, inaccurate kicking keeping Dudley in the game.
B Grade
Western Districts v Wisanger
Luckily the B Grade started and the Gosse mist had cleared. Play started fast with Wisanger opening the score. Cody Schulz and Daniel Kane were having a great tussle standing each other. Digger was doing some fancy footwork to get it to the forwards but Wisanger’s defence was strong. James Ridley from Wisanger found his full forward to put one more on the scoreboard for his side. JK ran out hard to find Whickers but the pressure was on Western Districts.
The second quarter started with Kingi for Wisanger tackling well. Damien Florance and Greg downing were hard at the ball playing team footy. Keenan Hammat got his first kick in senior footy after also playing Colts earlier. Cod stood up for Wisanger marking it on the goal line to kick a goal. Wisanger being quite strong in the attack keeping the Wonkies boys on their toes.
After the break both sides came out on fire. Wonkies desperate in their attack found Greg Downing who kicked a goal. There was also great shepherding by JK. Inspiration must have hit the Wonkies side after the last goal as they were fierce in the attack. Both sides were quite evenly matched this quarter.
Clouds and a sprinkling of rain started to gather out west for the final quarter of the B Grade. Both sides were desperate for goals, eventually Cods persistence paid off and he scored for Wisanger. Damian Florance, Greg Downing and JK all played nice footy to set up a goal for number nine who kicked through to secure Wonks one more on the scoreboard. In the end it turned out in Wisanger’s favour – a great game of footy to watch, both sides are in fine form heading into the weeks ahead.
