 Weekend walk a western odyssey

Weekend walk a western odyssey

19 Nov, 2009 03:54 PM
The enjoyable weekend started with 17 arriving for tea and fellowship on Friday night at the Karatta Earth centre, which proved to be the perfect venue for the group.

This night was special as it was a milestone birthday for one of the founding members of the club. Birthday celebrations continued on Saturday and Sunday as other walkers joined for various parts of the weekend.

“Happy birthday” was sung three times as candles were blown out each day.

Saturday night was another highlight as we sat around the outdoor log fire, enjoying nibbles, drinks and a pooled BBQ tea. We found time to explore scenic walks around the Centre. Most walks were on specially marked paths, including the path to the dam. Orchids and other natives in bloom lined the pathways.

A short distance east of the Karatta centre we found the oval and cricket pitch, the former playing field of the Western Districts Sporting Club. This brought back memories for at least one of our walkers, who remembered having to change behind cars or trees as there were no official dressing rooms then.

The serious walking started midday Saturday when 25 walkers (plus our junior participant) set out for the Hanson Bay to Kelly Hill Caves trek, walking via the Grassdale property.

The South West River was flowing, so our only option was to remove shoes and wade through.

Once over the river, several chose to leave shoes off to feel the soft sand as we made our way to the end of the bay to the designated walking path.

We discovered an old, disused pig trap on the Grassdale section where many wild pig diggings made rough terrain in places.

After our lunch stop at Edwards Cottage we had a slippery small creek to jump or step across. Here RR thought he had a golden opportunity to splash our birthday girl. However, it backfired, with RR slipping himself and ending up being the wet one.

We later rested in glorious sunshine on the edge of a very full Edwards (or Grassdale) Lagoon, where we were surprised to see stinging nettles growing.

Lots of Sun orchids and other natives were flowering on this walk. We encountered a friendly goanna who posed for photos before RR encouraged it to move to a safer area.

We met others doing this walk in the opposite direction, including a group of young sporting guys from Parndana. This lovely walk took us about four hours over approx. 9km.

New territory for many of the 27 ½ walkers participating in Sunday’s activities as we traversed the Mt Stockdale and Mt Taylor areas, where we climbed both mountains, enjoying 360 degree views, whilst some also tried adventure caving.

Our leaders explained the interesting history of this area, using an extract from a book written by Jean Nunn. In the late 1800’s Robert Stockdale and the Taylor brothers, Benjamin and William, were attracted to KI after experiencing grazing difficulties in the SE of SA.

They took up 14 leases comprising 715 square miles (about 1/3 of KI), and set up at least three stations, the main one being Karatta, an Aboriginal word meaning “the meeting of the waters”.

Our lunch was enjoyed high on Mt. Taylor with moss covered rocks, whistling birds and an abundance of flowering natives setting the scene as we perched near the cave entrance.

Ligurian bees had formed about 8 natural beehives, which hung from the entrance to the caves. These bees were busy but docile as we passed them to explore the caves by torch- light.

We discovered stalactites, stalagmites and columns, with many still forming with little droplets of water visible. Broken columns suggested there may have been movement in the cave structure. We walked on the edge of another large lagoon before finishing our walk along Mt. Stockdale road where we observed how the Banksias had regenerated in profusion after the fires. Also in abundance were yellow Golden Pennants, plus a mystery orange-leaved bush with berries.

After a chat, drink and the final birthday cake, we thanked our leaders, said farewell and headed for home, ending an excellent weekend.
