The Kangaroo Island Tennis Association had a bigger weekend of tennis with the regular Friday night junior competition at Kingscote.
It was pleasing to see the improvement these young people are showing this
season no doubt helped by the support of some KITA members and professional coaching.
Saturday was the last minor round match for the seniors this season and in a very unusual occurrence for K.I, play was completed in the matches at Parndana and not in Kingscote.
Minor premiers Stokes Bay were hosted by Kingscote and wet courts through the day prevented all sets being played with a draw as a result.
Wisanger was the away team at Parndana with a very even contest.
After completion of both the doubles and then the singles matches the sets were tied. Wisanger perhaps was lucky to run out the winners with tie break wins in the top double and the final reverse double of the day. Great support and good tennis from the young players in both teams. The Christiansen brothers teamed up in the lower order for Wisanger. Good job boys.
Racquets were swinging again on Sunday morning at Wisanger for the competitors in the Ratcliffe and Eagle trophy junior tournament (report below).
Senior semi final matches will be played this coming weekend at Kingscote with Stokes Bay v Wisanger and Kingscote v Parndana. Spectators are always welcome to any of the K.I.T.A. matches. Unlike where you pay to see the stars play, admission to see the locals is free.
Ratcliffe Eagle Trophy
Other commitments meant there were a smaller number of young players this year for the Ratcliffe Eagle Trophy held at Wisanger
on Sunday.
Kieran Wallace managed to outgun Brodie West in the boys final to win the Ratcliffe Trophy but the score did not indicate the great shot-making by both players.
Kieran has always displayed a great tennis talent in both junior and senior level in the past few years.
Spectator comments on the day suggest Brodie played some of his best tennis ever but was not able to wear down Kieran who was very consistent on the day.
First round losers in the boys section, played off in the plate competition.
This provided a very tight match between Jordan Treble and Jake Christiansen with Jake being the eventual winner in a tie-break.
The winner of the Eagle Trophy was former
runner-up Mikayla West, who played two very tough matches to win.
In her first match she played an extremely in-form Cori Kelly. These two have played each other several times this season, have a similar style and are very even on the court with each having defeated the other in matches. Sunday was no
exception with Mikayla able to just squeak in by winning a tie-break against Cori.
Mikayla then played Shayne Richter who definitely revelled in the challenge today by playing the best tennis we have seen from her this season. She went down to Mikayla in a very hard fought match to be the runner-up this year.
It was great to see how far some of the players have come this season especially some of the young first year players.
The contenders were a credit to themselves today with the matches played in great spirit and enthusiasm and with all players displaying good sportsmanship.
