Pointers clear dodgy diversion for lunch

17 Apr, 2009 10:27 AM
The Strawbridge Pointers held their inaugural barbecue cruise at American River on Wednesday April 8.

Regular pointers, “Jafra”, “Golden Odyssey” and “Windalee” were joined by Ken Smyth in “Rommany”, making her maiden voyage with the Pointers.

Feeling miffed at being left at the moorings, Ken’s dinghy tried to steal his thunder by going on a cruise of her own.

Fortunately the incoming tide intervened and she was rescued from the mud bank by Roger and Greg.

Ken was reprimanded for this transparent attempt to foil other crews from starting on time.

Crews were allocated with Tony Geyer and Roger joining Ken and overseeing “Rommany’s” impressive run up the channel. Robert Bruce accompanied Tim to make certain the barbecue arrived at our destination.

Insurance brokers to the stars, Phil and Julie Vanzo, joined Greg on “Jafra” and inspected last week’s damage claims. They claim the cheque is “in the mail”.

The redoubtable Churchills soon had “Windalee” rigged up to form a picturesque quartet of boats.

A favourable sou’easterly eased the fleet around the beacon, which is currently occupied by four cormorant chicks and their copious relatives.

Suitable oaths were hurled at these boat soiling creatures before we struck a course for Rocky Point.

All yachts enjoyed a brisk reach towards Brown Beach before tacking into Rocky Point.

Under heavy interrogation later, David admitted to racing, under his self proclaimed rules. “Windalee’ certainly cut through the water beautifully.

Rafted up adjacent to the prominent rocky headland, all crews and BBQ’s were ferried ashore to the idyllic beach by Tim’s tender, and glorious aromas soon bathed the air. Well rowed, Tim.

Phil’s steaks and snags were enjoyed by all under the warm autumn sunshine. Inquisitive pelicans and an eagle ray joined in the fun

Future outings for the Pointers were discussed along with the wish to recruit more members. If you just enjoy being under sail, contact the co-ordinator on 85537371 and a berth can easily be arranged.

Back on the boats, the 8-12 knot breeze allowed an unhindered run to the beacon before rounding up, cursing the cormorants once again and powering back to the wharf.

Several craft reported keel problems, with David and Glen lending new meaning to the term,”keel-hauling”, the following day.

“Golden Odyssey” encountered minor sail problems, with Robert refusing to go aloft to free the cleat. Too many snags, he claimed.

The star of the day was indeed “Rommany”. With Ken’s attention to detail and fastidious work, this yacht looks a treat and under Roger’s tutelage, sailed wonderfully.

Next outing will be Wednesday April 22, all welcome.
