On the face of it, there’s an absurd irony to “creating” a beach on Kangaroo Island when there are already many beautiful seaside locations where visitors and residents can enjoy sun, sea and sand.
However, the people of American River have a valid point to make.
A beach would provide a much-needed attraction and drawcard to their historic village.
Also, the closest swimming point is at Pennington Bay, not necessarily a safe or welcoming location for families with young children seeking seaside relaxation.
The River has been a popular tourist destination for decades and many middle-aged couples from the mainland spent their honeymoon there during the town’s boom period.
It has a proud maritime history that stretches back to before official European settlement of the island.
However, at this point the town is in dire need of an attraction to bring families back and encourage residents to stay.
Of course, there will be many hoops to jump through for this beach proposal to succeed, not the least of which will be the financial implications of any plan.
Environmental considerations and any impact on the boat-launching facilities will also need to be investigated.
The wharf area provides a focal point for the town, especially with the refurbished boat ramp and the sculpture and seating provided by the Town Centres Project.
A beach would further beautify and enhance this area.
Residents of American River must be congratulated for their energy and enthusiasm in pursuing options to revitalise their town.
