The KI Shorebirds Photo Exhibition opened on Friday May 2 at the KI Community Art Gallery.

Photos had to be of birds taken on KI. Twenty-one photographers showcased their work, some for the first time.

The shorebirds section was won by Neeltje Grootenboer for her stunning portrait of a White-faced Heron.

Matt Nettheim won the general birds section with his capture of a pardalote in action.

Best Youth Entry was given to Aidan Hamilton for his abstract view of a bird in a window.

Well-known professional photographer Quentin Chester and local artist Janine Mackintosh judged the entries and were impressed by the quality of the work, with Ms Mackintosh saying, “birds are obviously a favourite photographic subject for islanders, with many of the photographs really capturing their unique behaviours and characteristics”.

The organisers hope this will become an annual event.
