FIVE-DAY CARNIVAL BRINGS BOATLOADS OF EAGER BOWLERS

One may have felt that we lived on Christmas Island rather than Kangaroo Island recently as boat loads of people arrived from overseas.

However there was no cause for alarm.

The people from overseas were all bowlers coming to KI for the 5-day Bowling Carnival; and they came in hoards. Over 100 in total from bowling clubs in all parts of S.A and several also came from interstate.

For many years Kangaroo Island bowlers have worked hard to improve the profile of our 5-day Carnival and make it an event of significance on the KI calendar. It is the only bowls carnival in the state that is run at three venues.

Kangaroo Island people are recognised for their friendship to visitors. As a result we are one of, if not the biggest bowls carnivals in the state. This year’s carnival was no exception.

Nevertheless this year we were tested. Heavy rain on the first day of the carnival caused an early end to the day on the opening Saturday. The two grass greens were unable to be used for the remainder of the carnival. It sent the tournament director into emergency mode but he was more than capable of meeting the challenge.

New draws were arranged with different formats for each day. They worked very well even though he had very little sleep.

The ladies of each of the three clubs excelled themselves with the meals and lunches they provided. We discovered entertainers with talents that perhaps had not been previously identified. Could Allan Childs and Dave Clifford do well at “Australia’s Got Talent”. Will Danny Lovering be forever known as “Skippy” and become a legend at the Hospital fete.

The carnival was a huge success. Again islanders worked tirelessly to provide a major function that did the Island proud. The event had fantastic sponsorship. These major events that put KI on the map could not exist without the support of the local businesses and this is acknowledged in the current issue of the newspaper. Congratulations to all involved.
