Kingscote's Zac Edwards wins 2016 Mail Medal

Kingscote footballer Zac Edwards has won the 2016 Mail Medal as the Kangaroo Island Football League A grade best and fairest.

At the KIFL dinner on Monday night at the Parnadana Hotel, the award was presented by the Sunday Mail’s sports editor, Tim Hilferty and was accepted by Zak’s father George, as Zak was away working in Adelaide.

Wayne Phillips, MC for the evening, was not going to let a non-appearance stand in the way of an amusing bit of banter and managed to get Zak on the phone so that the room could hear his acceptance speech.

Earlier in the evening, Kangaroo Island welcomed the return of one of its favourite sons, Brendon Lade, as guest speaker.

Lade had a lot to say about getting young people involved in the game.

“I like coaching the kids,” he said.

“I say to them, ‘It’s about what you can do and not what you can’t’.

“You’ve got to find out what makes Gen Y tick.”

The room dug deep into pockets and purses and raised a fantastic $1000 for Wayne Phillips’ favourite charity, Beyond Blue.
