“20-odd years ago a few residents decided this place, American Beach as it was then known, needed to be organised in the way of a Progress Association.

“The American Beach Progress Association Inc was officially declared in 1995.

“The founding committee members consisted of John Sabel – President, Des Gill – Vice President, Lyn Marytain – Secretary, Dudley James and Ian Hayes – committee members.

“Since that day we have moved forward and achieved many goals and improvements for Baudin Beach.

“In January 2003 we had a name change from American Beach and it was officially proclaimed as Baudin Beach and was declared and gazetted as a township.

“From the onset of this Association, two members’ achievements and dedication has been paramount for this Association. Their continuous loyal support has been outstanding.

“I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Baudin Beach Progress Association to present these awards to Dudley James and John Sabel with our sincere thanks and appreciation.”

American Beach Progressing!

On January 8 a meeting of ratepayers met at the local boat ramp at Bessell Drive and the ‘American Beach Progress Association Incorporated’ was formed.

The first and most urgent task was attention to the rapidly disintegrating boat ramp. Everyone agreed urgent action was needed for safety and convenience.

With the financial help from Council and a troupe of volunteers, some definitely in the ‘Dad’s Army’ age group, work commenced.

Aided by heavy machinery expertly manned by Dennis Carey together with the professional services of Wayne Riley paid by a local contractor, the team put in two solid days work – not bad, considering some of those guys came here to retire and take it easy. Stage One finished Jan 19. There is still more work to be done before the ramp is completed to the satisfaction of all, however, those who are in search of the elusive dozen or anyone wishing to mess around and play sailors, life is a bit easier!

We are given to understand the next item is to beautify the area by planting numerous trees and other surprises are being considered. We’ll keep you posted with further news as it happens.

Cheers – Anne Connolly.
