Two important projects on Kangaroo Island and Fleurieu Peninsula will share in $50,000 of State Government funding, following a community vote.
Locals nominated the projects within the Fund My Idea program, with the successful recipients receiving the highest level of community support.
Parndana Progress Association’s Town Hall and Museum Precinct project received $28,600 to build a Soldier Remembrance Wall.
Meanwhile, Victor Harbor High School will use its $21,400 to implement a sensory garden self-regulation project.
Fund My Idea opened to the region to coincide with the Kangaroo Island and Fleurieu Peninsula Country Cabinet.
Premier Jay Weatherill and Cabinet visited the region from June 4-6, meeting with business leaders, local councillors and members of the community to understand the challenges facing the area.
Almost 600 people attended events which included public forums and community barbeques.
The community put forward 15 proposals for the Kangaroo Island and Fleurieu Peninsula round, which attracted more than 600 votes.
Cheryl May, President of Parndana Progress Association said, “It was fabulous to receive the phone call last week letting us know we have received the full funding for our next two stages of the Parndana Town Hall and Museum Precinct project.
“We really appreciate all the people both on and off the island that took the time to vote for our project and look forward to keeping you all in the loop with our progress in the future.”
Premier Jay Weatherill said, “During our visit to Kangaroo Island and the Fleurieu Peninsula, we gained valuable insights into the priorities of this region along with some of the difficulties that directly affect local residents.
“While growing visitation will be a boost to local businesses, we are also investing in measures to benefit the broader local community – from the recently announced Fund My Idea initiatives to investments in sporting facilities, environmental protection and schools.”
Funding has also been received for an upgrade of the Kingscote Skate Park, new change rooms at Dudley United Netball Club at Penneshaw and to the KI RSL for two commemorative Light Horsemen uniforms.
