Art lovers and visitors are invited to a special exhibition opening this Friday, September 29, at 5.30 pm, at Fine Art Kangaroo Island gallery in Kingscote.

Gabrielle Jones is a remarkable young artist with a compulsion to create intricate, detailed realistic wildlife art.

‘Stuff It… Not Taxidermy’, will be Gabrielle’s first solo exhibition and an opportunity to view her fascinating sculpture - fabricated entirely from synthetic materials – together with a dozen watercolour paintings inspired by her life at Hanson Bay, the Flinders Ranges and Fraser Island.

The exhibition will be opened by Alison Heath, Manager of Southern Ocean Lodge where Gabrielle created and sold her first life size echidna.

Dr Peggy Rismiller, co-founder of Pelican Lagoon Research Centre and an echidna, goanna and snake scientist, established artist and interpretative guide at the Lodge, will present a floor talk.

Please join us this Friday evening, or view the exhibition daily from 10–5pm throughout the holidays. All artworks are for sale. For enquiries please contact curator Fleur Peters on 8553 0448 or visit fineartkangarooisland.com.

Easter Art Show Set to Shine

The island’s most anticipated art exhibition, established in the 1980s to showcase local works, has become the largest and most diverse art show on an island which arguably hosts more artists and exhibitions per head of population than anywhere else in the state.

From its early beginnings with a few paintings displayed among the blooms and succulents of the Penneshaw Annual Flower Show to the first official Easter Art Exhibition in 1985, the exhibition has survived and thrived under the guidance of volunteers and the Artists Collective of KI.

The premier, biennial, event on the local arts calendar, the next Kangaroo Island Easter Art exhibition will open on Good Friday March 30 2018 in the Penneshaw Town Hall, running until April 8 2018.

The exhibition celebrates more than three decades of successful artistic promotion and development for local artists with substantial prizes, from generous sponsors, offered for a range of categories.

The theme for the major open category will be, ‘Watch This Space’, and one of two professional judges confirmed is curator, Leigh Robb from the Art Gallery of SA.

Young and emerging artists will exhibit alongside established successful artists in a wonderful celebration of island pride and culture.
