Lake Barrington, Tasmania, on September 26 and 27, provided the perfect venue for the 16th Australian Masters Games where Kangaroo Island’s Dragon Boat team paddled fast and furious, taking out two bronze medals.

KI Dragons sent a team of ten women and two men. They entered the 10s races, and joined up with a team from Bendigo to enter the 20s races with a full boat.

Club President Mary Alice Swan said, “We had never paddled with Bendigo as a team, so our balance, techniques and positions were crafted so we could all do our best and enjoy the events”.

They competed in clear, still waters, in five events, each with three heats, on a 250 metre course. The strong strokes Deb Sleeman, Janet Simpson, Jenni Harris, Ron Swan and Mary-Alice Swan led the teams and in each heat they improved as a team and made better times.

The team included Kenita Williamson, Ruth De La Lande, Scott McDonald, Liz Melling, Carola Grantham, Debbie Clarke and Pat Austin, with support from Dave Foreman, Phil Clarke, and absent-through-injury team member, Sharon Clarke.

“Our good teamwork work culminated in our winning two bronze medals in the Senior B Open 20s and Senior B Open 10s. A great effort for the Kangaroo Island Dragons!”

If you would like to have a ‘Come and Try’ at Dragon Boating, you are welcome to join the team on a Sunday morning, and after paddling, stick around to enjoy their famous morning tea.

You can also participate in the first annual Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge Dragon Boat Corporate Cup, either as an individual or as part of a corporate team.

Mary Alice said, “if you can’t grab a friend or form your own team, just let us know and we will put you in a team.”

The Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge Dragon Boat Corporate Cup is being held on Sunday December 3 from 10am followed by cup presentation and lunch.

There are three training sessions available for Corporate Cup participants on November 19 and 26 from 10-11.30am. Another practice session is being held on Saturday December 2 from 3-4pm. Participants need to attend at least one practice session to learn the basics.
