The Governor-General, His Excellency the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) made a special visit to Kangaroo Island on the weekend of November 11 and 12.
Mayor Peter Clements said it was “a great privilege and an honour for Council to be hosting His Excellency, the Governor-General of Australia Sir Peter Cosgrove”.
“In his weekend visit, I believe His Excellency has had a good opportunity to experience the warmth and friendliness of our Island culture, and the hope and prosperity we all share.
“He has seen the comfort and beauty of our way of life and the earnestness we have not to spoil what we have.
“He is also aware of the resilience the island has shown in the face of economic hardship, which still besets much of rural Australia, and I have no doubt, in his travels, he has witnessed many of the centralist government policies, from all quarters of government, that leave rural and remote areas wanting for a fairer share of resources and attention.
“Importantly, at the Civic reception on Saturday evening, Sir Peter met with the family of our very own Sapper Jamie Larcombe, Steve and Tricia Larcombe’s son, and their three daughters. Sapper Larcombe paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom we enjoy here in Kangaroo Island, in South Australia, and indeed in the western world.
“What better way to honour him than with a visit from our own Governor General on Remembrance Day, when we remember many others from outlying areas of Australia who sacrificed their lives for what we all enjoy today.
“We give our heartfelt thanks for this sacrifice.”
Prior to the Civic reception on Saturday evening, Sir Peter attended the Parndana Show.
On Sunday he visited the Kangaroo Island Health Service and aged care facility Anchusa, the Men’s Shed, Island Pure Dairy, and before departing, went on a site tour of the new Kingscote Airport
