Matt Moran bags abalone on Kangaroo Island

Celebrity chef Matt Moran was hunting and gathering for his family today on Kangaroo Island.

Moran made a quick visit to the island on Thursday and Friday to lend his face and skills to mate Colin West of Internet TV show Wine RAM.

On Thursday they visited the False Cape Wines vineyard on Dudley Peninsula with winemaker Greg Follett.

After being toured around the island on Thursday by Tony Nolan of Kangaroo Island Culinary Adventures, and cooking up a storm with food donated by local producers at Kangaroo Island Beach Lodges on Thursday night, Moran and West took a turn with Andrew Neighbour from KI Marine Adventures on Friday.

As well as filming and spotting dolphins, they went diving for their own abalone in the cold June waters of Nepean Bay. Moran bagged six abalone which he planned to take back to his family in Sydney for a barbecue on Friday night.

He said the trip was “a bit of a reccy”, hinting he may be back to the island soon.

It was his first trip since the MasterChef episode filmed here in early 2012 and since the Twitter scandal, when he was accused of tweeting about Kangaroo Island having never been here.

“I’m still waiting for the supposed payment for that. The fact is, I tweeted because I was on the island and loved it. There was no payment. It was hard to defend myself at the time because the MasterChef thing was under wraps,” Moran said.
