The Kingscote Youth and Skate Park hub has received a much needed boost and is well on its way to becoming a reality.
At their last meeting, the Lions Club of Kangaroo Island agreed to donate $20,000 towards the skate park and want to be involved in helping to move the project forward. Added to this, Council has resolved to support the project up to 30 per cent of value, to help the committee leverage extra funding through state bodies.
Advance Kingscote Progress Association are driving the project and have engaged Oxygen Landscape Architects + Urban Designers to help develop the space.
The architects consulted with key stakeholders and young people about the space and have developed a plan that includes a recreational plaza; a meeting place that is simple in design and encompasses the skate park hub.
The new plan includes a low-lying area with steel elements that can be fabricated and installed which will have minimal concrete elements to help keep costs down. The design also includes seating, a shelter shed and tree planting to make it a comfortable space in summer.
The original skate park bowl built in the 1970s will also be retained within the hub but will be updated to comply with safety standards.
The committee have raised $23,000 plus a $5,000 donation from Advance Kingscote and received S7,590 from Council in the 2016/17 Community Infrastructure Grant Program towards architectural fees.
Advance Kingscote chairman Graeme Connell said, “We still have some major fund-raising to complete the project but now that we have a concept plan and some indicative costings, we believe we can ramp up the process”.
To complete the project, Advance Kingscote will be seeking funding from the Office for Recreational and Sport which is due in April, and they are in the process of applying for development approval from Council.
The plan will be on display at the KI Community Centre in Kingscote.
