An application was lodged on May 11 2017 by Zinc Mining Pty Ltd to explore for zinc in the Cassini Area, about 30 kilometres west of Kingscote.
The area extends roughly 234 square kilometres north-west and north-east of Parndana but excludes Parndana Conservation Park.
The application is for one year.
According to information gleaned from australianminesatlas.gov.au, deposits containing zinc form from hot fluids generated within the earth.
These fluids can be trapped below the surface in cracks and where limestone occurs the fluids may fill cavities to form rich but patchy deposits.
Partially eroded deposits are easy to discover; the deposits found at Broken Hill, NSW, and Mt Isa, Queensland, form the basis of today’s Australian zinc mining industry.
Exposed deposits are becoming harder to find in Australia and exploration companies are currently looking beneath the surface, which is expensive and difficult.
Australia ranks first in the world in economic zinc resources because of the large deposits at McArthur River NT), Cannington and Century (both at Mt Isa).
High-grade zinc silicate ore is mined intermittently from the small Beltana deposit in South Australia, owned by Perilya Freehold Mining Pty Ltd.
Zinc is used as protective galvanised coatings for iron and steel, zinc oxide as additives to rubber, zinc-based chemicals in agriculture and for rolled zinc products.
According to Austrade, mineral rights in Australia are reserved to the Crown, but in some cases may be owned by the land owner.
The acquisition of rights to minerals stems from legislative frameworks in each state and provide initially for the exploration of the resource and consist of the grant by the Crown in the form of exploration permits, licences or leases.
Actual mining is subject to a further grant of mining or minerals production leases or licences.
