The Mercure Corporate Cup is a newly established dragon boat event which will be held at American River on December 2 and 3.

Kangaroo Island Dragons president Mary Alice Swan said the community challenge was going to be fun.

“It’s something entirely different for KI, it’s fast and furious, and there’ll be a lot of splashing and noise,” Ms Swan said.

“So get your team together and let’s breathe some fire into the river.

“The aim of the event is to have about six local teams of six to eight people attend two or even better, three training sessions to learn the necessary skills and to bond as a team, culminating with the race event.

Teams can be made up from a local workplace, a sporting team, friends or even just a family group.

The teams will be bolstered by at least two experienced paddlers from the Kangaroo Island Dragons.

Training sessions will be held at the American River boat ramp from 10am on November 19 and 26, and then a final session at 3pm on Saturday, December 2. On the Saturday night there will be a pre-race dinner at the Mercure Lodge and all teams are encouraged to attend.

The Mercure is offering discounted packages for accommodation so teams can make it a great weekend.

The actual race will be held on Sunday, December 3, from 10am to 12.30pm.

There will be a series of ‘round robin’ heats culminating with the top two teams racing against each other for the cup.

There will be a trophy presentation and sausage sizzle at the conclusion, and an opportunity for spectators to have a ‘come and try’ paddle.

The fee for participating is $20 which covers all scheduled training sessions and race day.

The Kangaroo Island Dragons will provide the boats, paddles, life-jackets and training.

The Mercure Corporate Cup is being organised by Kangaroo Island Dragons and is supported by Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge.
