KI Hunt Club season set to open

HUNT CLUB: Nikki Jones jumps last season during a regular Sunday ride with the Kangaroo Island Hunt Club.

The sound of distant hoof beats, the call of the hunting horn, the flash of horses following the hounds which are chasing the fox.

A scene reminiscent of England and hunting, except it happens right here on Kangaroo Island.

Okay, delete the bit about hounds and foxes but the KI Hunt Club has all the rest.

The hunt club has all the traditions of English hunting with the formalities of the hunt master and riders in full hunting attire riding horses and jumping stone heaps, fences and fallen logs.

Then throw in the food wagon which has plenty of room for the Eskies with beer and you have hunting, KI style.

Have you read the hunt club write ups in the Islander over the years and wondered what it was all about? Well make this the year you find out.

Everyone is welcome to join the KI Hunt Club and you don’t need to be a horse rider to join.

Each hunt is followed by car loads of spectators, so come along to watch the riders and have a great social afternoon.

If you are a rider, bring your horse. There are no compulsory jumps. Are you able to ride but don’t have a horse? Let us know and we will see if we can even find a horse for you!

The KI Hunt Club season starts off with a causal ride at Ron and Viv Florance’s property on Mt Stockdale Road on the Sunday, April 22.

This will be a casual day, no jumps, just a chance to get out for a ride through farmland.

To make it even more social the ride will start at 11am and at the conclusion we the club will have a shared barbecue lunch, BYO meat and salad.

The preliminary hunt will be at Yaeda Dorrestijn’s property at 2492 East West Two Highway, on the Sunday, May 6.

This will be a chance for riders and horses to try out a  few jumps and “warm up” for the hunt season. Riding off at 12.30pm.

The opening hunt will be on Sunday, May 13 at Vivonne Heights on Damian and Annette Florance’s property at 2089 Harriet Road, with a lunch at noon. Lunch is provided and ride off at 1.15pm.
