A lunch was held at the Kangaroo Island Yacht Club for much-loved former parish priest at the Kangaroo Island Catholic Church, Father Charles Gauci, who has been appointed the new Bishop of Darwin.

The KI Parish became part of the Southern Deanery in 2012 and Fr Charles became parish priest, holding that position until mid-2017 and visiting regularly from his home base in Noarlunga.

He moved to be Administrator at St Francis Xavier Cathedral last year and in September he will take up his new role in the Top End.

Fr Charles has been a priest in the Archdiocese of Adelaide for 40 years and said when he received the call about being Bishop of Darwin he was dumbfounded.

“After a couple of days, I realised any reasons for saying no were mostly personal – I love this diocese – but I have to be where God is asking me to be... I will give it my all.”
