Wonks take on Kingscote in KI Grand Final rematch | PHOTOS

Saturday saw Western Districts do the trip into town for the Grand Final rematch against reigning Premiers Kingscote in Round 1 of the 45 over cricket competition.

Conditions were perfect for cricket and after winning the toss Kingscote were keen to make up for a less than ideal start in the pre-season 20/20 competition.

Unfortunately for Kingscote the Wonkies bowlers took wickets at a steady rate and if not for Anthony Anderson holding fast and putting on 87 the final score would have been a lot less than the 129 for 10 wickets from 22 overs.

The best of the bowlers for Wonks were L. Hedges 2/19 and C. Blythe 2/18 and good to see one of the more “senior” players in B. Davis getting the top fielding votes.

With 130 to win a gambling man would have had his money on Wonks to take home the chocolates but as has happened before a mediocre score on other grounds is a little tougher to achieve at the Kingscote Soldiers Memorial Oval.

Kingscote also managed to get consistent wickets and with P. Green bowling very tightly they managed to put a little pressure back on the Wonks batsmen and at the main break Wonks still needed over 50 runs with six wickets in hand.

Cricket is a funny game with twists and turns and when D. Butler started bowling hand grenades and supported by some sharp keeping from L. Virgo all of a sudden Kingscote were in the box seat taking seven wickets for less than 20 runs leaving Wonks all out for 91.

Best bowlers for Kingscote were D. Butler 4/23, K. Stead 2/23 and P. Green 1/11 with A. Anderson getting the nod for the best fielding with V. Virgo and J. lee also getting a mention for their fielding

A good game played in good spirits by both teams and a little bird told me that a batsman from each team actually walked after been given not out. Refreshing to see that there is still some sportsmanship left in our game.  – Backward Square Leg
