Kangaroo Island resident Bec Bennett is continuing her 10-year tradition of offering swimming lessons on the Island.
The “Swim KI - Water Safety and Awareness” course is running from Monday, December 17 to December 21 at the Parndana Pool.
Bec has designed her own water safety awareness swimming program, which is designed around National Swimming and Water Safety Framework, which covers, entries and exits skills, floating and sculling Skills, movement and swimming strokes, survival and PFD skills, rescue skills and water safety knowledge.
“I have been able to contextualise the program taking into consideration our children's skills and our water environments,” she said.
“This is a great program as it is for as young as 6 months old upwards, as it is never too early to introduce water safety and familiarisation to children. I am looking forward to running the program and have a wonderful team around me.”
This year’s instructors are Melissa Holman, Rhana Berlin, Holly Mueke and assistant instructor Alex Bennett.
Swimming is a passion for Bec, who swam competitively in Victoria throughout her schooling years.
“I have swam all of my life where I was lucky enough to have a pool in our back yard and my Mum making sure I was able to swim to safety as early as 18 months,” Bec said.
“My passion became a job that I love. I have been instructing over the last 10 years and still love it. l have enjoyed working along side Mel for the school swimming and running my own private swimming lessons.
“Not all kids have the opportunity to swim or access swimming lessons, except for the school program, the summer programs are a great opportunity to improve and learn new skills.
“Swim KI - Water Safety and Awareness complements the Vac Swim program as they both cover the safety of swimming in different water environments of the island.
“I love seeing the change in all kids from the first day to the last day when they receive their achievement certificate.”
