Work begins to rebuild Prospect Hill stairs

Contractors Harrold and Kite have started work on the $1 million project to rebuild the stairs up Prospect Hill on Kangaroo Island.

The company also built the KI Wilderness Trail infrastructure and most recently was involved in the new KI Sculpture Park at Penneshaw.

Surveying work has commenced and the project is expected to take up to 20 weeks to complete.

The fibre-reinforced structures will start arriving later this month and early January.

The new stair platforms will be built on pilings, suspended above the sand up the hill.

Mayor Michael Pengilly said his view was the steps would not have needed to be replaced had there been proper maintenance and the money could be better spent on bridge across the Chapman River.

The project is being funded by the Federal Government with former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull making the $750,000 announcement at the site during his visit to open the KI Airport.

The State Government has since pitched in an additional $125,000 with the KI Council funding the balance.
