New water main flows to Cygnet River, KI

SA Water is replacing more than 300 metres of water main along Hog Bay Road at Cygnet River, Kangaroo Island.

The works has seen a traffic light stop-and-go system set up on Hog Bay Road and work is expected to take seven weeks.

The replacement of the water pipeline along Hog Bay Road, between Playford Highway and Cygnet River is part of on-going efforts by SA Water to reduce the impact of water main breaks on customers.

The works form part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to replace around 375,000 meters of water mains across the state between 2016 and 2020.

SA Water’s general manager of asset operations and delivery, Mark Gobbie said the works would see the installation of new PVC pipes, which were flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

“With new water mains having a traditional lifespan of around 100 years, the work being done at Cygnet River will help us to continue providing world class water services to our local customers well into the future,” he said.

“We can’t completely prevent water main leaks and breaks from taking place due to environmental factors like weather and soil movement, but we’re committed to proactively working to limit their frequency and impact on customers.

“This is one of many water main replacements SA Water is undertaking this year, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state.”

The upgrade works are expected to take approximately seven weeks to complete, with works typically occurring from Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm.

“For safety purposes, we ask residents and road users of Hog Bay Road to please be aware of changed traffic conditions in the area while the works are being completed,” he said.

“Our crews will also notify local residents of any temporary water supply interruptions when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes.”
