Get ready for the 2019 races on Kangaroo Island

The KI Racing Carnival is one of the Island’s biggest tourism events, attracting well over 3000 visitors each year. 

KI Racing Club itself injects over $200,000 into local business’s each year and supports several local charities and sporting clubs.

Local business’s also benefit from the huge influx of visitors to the island, hotels, accommodation venues, restaurants, as well most retail outlets.

It starts with the Australia Day “Racing at the Cygnet” six-race program on Saturday, January 26. A $5 entry fee going to Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Then the SeaLink KI Cup Carnival starts on Thursday, February 14 with a $15 entry fee, continuing on Saturday, February 16, featuring the Dudley Wines Kangaroo Island Cup with a $20 entry fee.

Both days feature a seven-race program, and record prize money is on offer, ensuring a great turn-up of mainland horses. 

Both meetings will be broadcast live on free-to-air TV around Australia and on-course betting with bookmakers and TAB will be available.

The club will be offering a range of pop up bars for you to enjoy with friends, trackside. These include the ever popular PIMMs bar, a Pirate Life beer bar as well as a Dudley Wines sparkling bar. 

Saturday will see Fashions on the Field with a $1000 cash prize together with one night’s accommodation at Southern Ocean Lodge for two people and return ferry transport courtesy of SeaLink for the winner and two night’s accommodation for two at KI Wilderness Retreat and one night’s accommodation at the Aurora Ozone Hotel and return ferry transport for two people and vehicle for the runner up. So break out the fascinators, fancy frocks, bow ties and sharp suits to have a chance at winning.

To encourage trainers and jockeys this year the club has introduced courtesy of the Daw family, the Arthur Daw Memorial Trainers Challenge of $5,500 in honour of Arthur. 

Trainers will earn points for starting horses on each of the three days of racing and also for winners and place-getters on each day of racing.

The challenge will repeat for the second year the Kangaroo Island Air Freight $1000 Jockey’s Challenge with points awarded for winners, place-getters and loosing rides as well as bonus points for riding at each day of racing.

The club will also supply trainers with free transport on SeaLink to allow them to bring their horses across from the mainland. Jockeys will also receive free walk on ferry transport across to the Island.

Former Islander, jockey Eran Boyd, who is an ambassador of the race club is also an ambassador for Craniafacial Australia. The club together with Eran will assist in raising money for this group.

The KI Racing Club is donating two tickets to the Long Lunch, SeaLink have donated tickets for two passengers from Adelaide and return, and the Island Motel have donated two nights accommodation, which will be auctioned off in Adelaide to raise money for this group.

Eran will also be donating part of her riding fees for the meetings to CranioFacial Australia.

The Long Lunch is always popular and at the moment there is only about 30 tickets still available before it sells out once again. Tickets are available through SeaLink at $199 includes a four course meal, Dudley Wines, beer and soft drinks.

Private marquees are available trackside with catering for 10 to 15 people but again are selling out fast and can be booked through the race club’s David Reid on 0497 097 733. 

Catering is also available in these marquees from Lucy’s KI Kitchen.

Motor Accident Commission, Turner Tyres and KI Transfers will sponsor free Kingscote bus transport on each of the three days of racing.

The club will also run its very popular Calcutta at the Aurora Ozone Hotel on Friday, February 15 from 7pm to 9pm. Tickets will be available at the course and at the Ozone before the draw.

The welcoming cocktail party will be held on Thursday, February 14 at the Aurora Ozone Hotel starting at 7pm. Tickets are now available at the Ozone Hotel.
