Kangaroo Island’s arts community is mourning the loss of Marion Gum, who passed away recently in Queensland.
Marion came to the Island with her late husband John as part of the Soldier Settler scheme, and together they farmed a property near the Middle River Dam.
She was a keen gardener and for many years exhibited in and convened the flower sections of the local Shows.
After attending art workshops through the CWA, Marion began painting, specialising in the blooms from her own garden as well as local native flowers.
Her exquisite watercolours were featured in many exhibitions across Kangaroo Island over the years.
Marion was a faithful, loyal and much-loved member of the Kangaroo Island Gallery, so much so that she was awarded life membership some years ago.
You could always tell when she had recently been in the KI Gallery by the vase of fresh flowers from her garden left on the desk.
She will be greatly missed by all who remember her warm, welcoming smile and quiet wisdom.
