Basketballs bouncing, long days and boys with endless energy.
The March long weekend saw the Kangaroo Island Basketball Association U14 Boys travel to Adelaide and put their skill to the test against other country districts.
The boys took home gold after being crowned the 2019 Division 5, SA Country Basketball champions.
The team consisted of Blake Florance, River Berden, Ethan Stoeckel, Jordan Whittle, Wynn Norris, Timmy Turner, Brady Christophers and Toby Nolan. They were supported by coach Linda Stoeckel, manager Jane Roberts and umpire Bev Nolan.
Day 1, Game 1: KI vs Mt Gambier
From the first tap of the ball Mt Gambier were physical and challenging every play. The hard, aggressive game was not what the boys were used to and it took them a half to match the style of play with Mt Gambier too strong.
Mt Gambier 26 defeated KI 20
Day 1, Game 2: KI vs Great Southern
Chaos would be the best word to use to describe the start of this game. With an unknown change of times, the players were required to take the court in a hurry and came out firing from the tip off. Strong team play and tight defence allowed them to record a comfortable win.
KI 56 defeated Great Southern 28
Day 2, Game 3: KI vs Mildura
Building on their team work from the previous game, the boys upped their pressure and did not drop their intensity for the whole game.
KI 64 defeated Mildura 18
Day 2, Game 4: KI vs Port Lincoln
Hard relentless pressure on the ball and strength when rebounding troubled Port Lincoln from the start. The KI boys used strong passing skills to their benefit and combined well in attack.
KI 47 defeated Port Lincoln 14
Day 3, Qualification Final: KI vs Great Southern
This was going to be a tough game from the start as Great Southern were coming off a strong game. It took the team a bit to find their groove before settling in and taking it hard to the basket. Once again, rebounding strength was one of the main differences between the teams.
KI 42 defeated Great Southern 26
Day 3, Semi Final: KI vs Port Lincoln
Nervous players took the court and there were a lot of passages of scrappy play. Despite this, a strong attacking game with some nice drives to the basket allowed for a convincing win.
KI 48 defeated Port Lincoln 19
Day 3, Grand Final: KI vs Great Southern
A tight game from the start and this was how the game was played for the whole 40 minutes.
No more than four points separated the teams for the majority of the game and it was still anyone's game with two minutes left. The boys dug deep and held on to be named the 2019 Division 5, SA Country Basketball champions.
KIBA would like to thank their sponsors for the weekend - Robyne and Wally Walden, Bella Restaurant, Brett and Jamie Christophers and Frances and Stephen Roberts, who provided food and drink for the team during the weekend.
The association would also like to thank the KI Council for the reduced hire rates for their training in the Pavilion. In addition, without the support of the families this trip would not have been possible.
