Wisanger takes on Western Districts in KI ANZAC Round | PHOTOS

First home game for season 2019 at Panther Park and Wisanger were hosting Western Districts.

The sun was out hardly a breath of wind, which made conditions perfect for footy.

It was good to see so many kids out on the oval playing AusKick and U12s. Everyone got a kick, there were some great tackles and marks from both teams.

Colts looked to be an even contest with Wisanger having a few out and the WD boys having a bit of height about them.

Wisanger got off to a great start kicking the first two goals through Charlie Baker but it wasn't long before Henry Hammatt kicked a great goal from the boundary, which kept his team in it.

As the game went on Wisanger slowly pulled away each quarter to run out comfortable winners 12.8 def Western Districts 5.1.

Henry, Riley and Jordy were among the Wonks' best while Charlie Dylan and Wade performed pretty well for the Panthers.

By the time the Reserves started there was a breeze from the northwest, maybe a three-goal advantage to the clubroom end.

This game also got off to a good start with the ball moving up and down the ground with some good skills on display.

Wisanger had a fairly young team on the Park which was showing to be a good advantage with there pace as the game went on.

Luke Shurven was taking some strong marks up forward and Jai Turner was lively through the middle making it hard for Wonks to move the ball from defence to attack.

By three quarter time Wisanger were up by five goals and eventually ran out comfortable winners defeating Western Districts 11.8 to 5.1.

Like I said great to see the younger kids playing good footy for both teams.

It was now the A Graders turn to show the spectators that footy on the Island is still at a good skill level, the conditions were a little bit blustery for the start of the Jamie Larcombe Memorial ANZAC Game, which was making it hard for both teams to hit their targets.

After the ANZAC ceremony, including the bugle and Ode, the game began.

Wonks flew out of the blocks with some great pressure and were rewarded with some early goals to Lucas Boyle and the ex-Panther Bluey Lockett.

Half way through the quarter the new Panther Maison Linke snapped his first for the day, which kept the Panthers in touch.

Damon Weatherspoon and Bluey Lockett were starting to collect some touches and giving their forwards plenty of opportunities to hit the scoreboard.

At the other end it was Ben Davis playing his 200th Senior game, stopping everything the Panthers were throwing his way making it hard for the boys in blue and white to score.

Wisanger had some good contributors in Boomer, Hutchy, Hodgy and Beeza to name a few but just weren't good enough on the day.

The game was played in good spirits and Wonks eventually ran out easy winners 14.9 defeating Wisanger 4.11.

Congratulations to Damon Weatherspoon, winner of the Jamie Larcombe Medal.

Good luck to all teams for the year. - Craig Turner
