Youth space taking shape at KI Community Centre

The new dedicated space for youth at the KI Community Centre is beginning to take shape thanks to the generous support from the State Government and Variety - the Children's Charity.

Established as a direct request from our young people to have a safe and central place to "hang out", the vision for the KI Youth Hub is to nurture and foster the social and cultural development of young people through music, events, activities, workshops, support groups and links with other sporting, social and community services.

Funding from Variety and the Department of Premier and Cabinet enabled Junction to create the framework for the initiative and complete works on the community centre kitchen and activity space.

Junction Community Centre coordinator Maree Baldwin said; "While we want the hub to be a space where young people hang out and have fun, we also want it to be a space which encourages youth leadership and active participation in their community."

In Term 1 as a pilot project, the Community Centre worked with Kingscote Area School teacher Rachel Pillar to support Year 11 Integrated Learning students' health and well-being through various programs.

"Inspired by the mosaic group, students have also started individual mosaic projects spending time with the volunteer group and learning how to do it," Ms Pillar said.

"This term, students have been working with Junction to develop the youth hub and move the project to the next level. The students have studied paint palettes and selected colours to reflect the different spaces and are now looking at furniture and fixtures within each space."

When completed the Youth Hub will comprise a lounge room, study space, music room, meeting room and coffee station. Junction will work with the school and students to develop a program around times, programs, supports etc.

"This is the Community Centre at its best. Young people spending time with older people learning skills and developing ideas together," Ms Baldwin said.

The Youth Hub is scheduled for completion by spring. For more information, contact Maree Baldwin, Junction Community Centre coordinator on 8553 2809 or drop in and take a look.
