Safety is the most important priority for Kangaroo Island Plantation Timbers (KIPT) as it ramps up operations in forestry on Kangaroo Island.
Last year, the company upgraded its safety processes and held a safety training day for its workers on the island, including those of its forestry management company PF Olsen. The KIPT team holds weekly safety briefings.
PF Olsen is an experienced forest manager and has assisted to develop the KIPT safety policies, using its vast experience from forestry in WA and Victoria.
KIPT's director of operations, Graham Holdaway, said safety was the company's number one priority.
"The requirement for safety comes before all other things," Mr Holdaway said.
"We will institute and monitor safe work practices at all levels of our business - from tree-planting, forest maintenance, harvest and transport though to ship-loading."
According to figures from Safe Work Australia, the postal, farm, construction and fishing industries are once again in the front lines when it comes to fatalities.
Last year, Safe Work Australia figures showed 118 workers were killed and the sheep, cattle and grain farming sub-sectors accounted for most of the serious claims.

When forestry, fisheries and farm workers are added, almost half of all those killed were in primary production.
One in every four worker fatalities involved the use of a vehicle, including forklifts.
To July 8 this year, 17 workers have died across Australia in farming, fisheries and forestry industries.
"Like any other farming operation, there are known dangers and it is incumbent on us to make sure our employees and contractors are well-educated and then supported to put that education into practice," Mr Holdaway said.
KIPT is Australia's only listed timberland company.
It manages a wholly-owned portfolio of hardwood and softwood forestry plantations, growing on former agricultural land on Kangaroo Island.
